All guides
  1. 01Guide What is a social compliance audit? A social compliance audit is an independent assessment that checks, through document review, a site tour and worker interviews, whether working conditions, occupational health and safety and business ethics at a production site meet local law, the buyer’s code of conduct and internationally recognised social compliance criteria. 8 October 2026 · 6 min read
  2. 02Guide Social audit preparation checklist To be ready for a social compliance audit, a workshop needs complete and mutually consistent personnel and social security records, payroll and time records, overtime consents, OHS documents, safe site conditions and informed workers before the auditor arrives. 8 October 2026 · 4 min read
  3. 03Guide Most common findings in subcontractor workshops The most common findings in subcontractor workshops are excessive overtime, unregistered workers, missing age documents, blocked exits, missing machine guards, inadequate first aid, wage and overtime calculation errors, unauthorised subcontracting and a missing risk assessment. 8 October 2026 · 3 min read

08Common questions

Short, direct answers.

All questions
01Who pays for the audit?

It depends on the brand's programme: some brands pay for audits themselves, others ask the supplier to pay. When a supplier commissions a pre-audit or training, the supplier pays.

02How long does an on-site audit take?

Usually one to two auditor-days. The exact duration depends on headcount, site size and audit scope, and is set during planning.

03What is the difference between announced and unannounced audits?

In an announced audit the date is shared in advance; in an unannounced audit there is no notice at all. A semi-announced audit gives a time window but not the exact day. The brand decides which applies.

04Which documents should I prepare?

The essentials are personnel files, social security filings, the last 12 months of payroll and time records, workplace permits, the health and safety risk assessment, the emergency plan and drill records. Any extra brand requirements are shared during planning.

05What happens if a zero-tolerance issue is found?

It is reported to the brand immediately, without waiting for the report. What happens next, such as urgent remediation or suspending business, is decided by the brand under its own policy.
